New Film Project: Mirada Karibe
My new film project Mirada Karibe will portray the Comeback scene and fanatics on Curaçao. Dancers at Comeback parties are usually referred to as Bailadores. They meet up to dance passionately in open fields surrounded by large walls. This allows only insiders to experience the music, vibe and ambiance. The Bolero or Son Montuno songs played at the parties are strongly nostalgic, romantic or melancholic. The songs tell stories about the experiences of people from the afro-Curaçaoan community.
Kòmbèk na Kòrsou - Comeback on Curaçao
The Papiamentu title Mirada Karibe refers to a Caribbean way of being and seeing. In that sense, Mirada Karibe will be exemplary for my practice as a filmmaker and artist.
A focus will be placed on the exploration of what constitutes a Caribbean existence [Caribbean being].
My work is motivated by the desire to share Caribbean stories and experiences through the cinematographic medium.
Photography by Sharelly Emanuelson
I have been living on Curaçao for 4 years now, and I realised that many people think I live in the Netherlands and/or are not aware of what it is I do.
So to change that I will provide more updates and information on the mediums I tend to use to capture the things I experience and have an interest in. Photography is one of the mediums you will see more of this year. My style is candid and simple. I use my camera, to capture a world of familiar and nuanced stories that help me make sense of myself, the people and the world around me. In my work meaning is found in the little things, moments are captured that few have time to notice.
